  • Off on her next adventure (Riley Bauman)

    Sarah,

How devastating it was for me to hear of your passing…

Having spent countless hours together in our shared garden singing with the frogs and eating tomatoes and blueberries until we were “SAZIATTO!!”, I know a little part of you is with me anywhere we are in the universe.

My last experience with you was the week before I left on an extended trip to New Zealand. I was amidst deep grief and we met in the misty garden around 10am. We ripped out the tomatoes and the woven willow we’d made and then went back to your house to do a massage exchange and a sauna.

You burned words in head that day. You said: “bon voyage chickie, who knows what’s next”.

I felt like I’d see you again, but I was mistaken.

We spoke a lot about death throughout our friendship. We spoke about loss and grief and joy and we even cried tears into your brand new decking when we stained it.

I returned to Canada for a quick 3 months before returning to NZ and I tried to visit you. Our schedules missed but I know that our last moments together meant everything. Just as it was meant to be.

I’ll think of you fondly whenever I touch a piano or anytime I give a massage. Our frequent swims and garden talks brought me so much joy. You taught me so much and were a kindred friend to me.

I’ll see you in my dreams. We’ll eat tomatoes and sing to the frogs.

Ps: I left the yellow watering can in the garden shed. You can have it ❤️

  • My dear friend (Jen Stackhouse) (Jen Stackhouse)

My dear friend (Jen Stackhouse) (Jen Stackhouse)

I met Sarah and Danny soon after moving to Galiano, at a Thanksgiving gathering held in the valley at Thera. From that first night, I recognized them as kin — wild-hearted, luminous, and overflowing with love.
This photo was taken at Danny’s birthday celebration a few years ago, a moment that still glows in my memory. Sarah was one of the most radically authentic beings I have ever had the privilege to know.

Sarah — I miss the simple knowing that you were close, just a phone call or a sleepover on my next visit away. Yet I feel you everywhere now: in the wind that moves through the trees, in the stars that keep watch, in the dreams where you still visit. Until our paths cross again, I carry you with love.

    Magic moments (Shelley Lawson)

Sarah had a knack for turning the simplest outing into a memorable event. Whether it was a chance meeting at the market or this simple drive to a local farm stand, her laughter, wisdom, and bright spirit brought magic to the moment.

I don’t recall what wisdom she is channeling here, but I know it was either deeply profound or hilariously silly – and undoubtedly exactly what I need to hear!

Pure medicine – a Sarah hug (Shelley Lawson)

Anyone who ever had a hug from Sarah knows the medicine it contained. She made me feel safe, seen, and supported with every encounter. Thanks Jen, for sharing this moment you captured at our last sleepover at Upper Narnia.

    At our wedding!

Sarah was a lively guest at our wedding. She danced and partied for hours! I was so glad she shared the night with us. I always enjoyed spending time with her; she was such a unique person.

    Sarah Eating Cake (Marta)

Sarah bought me a beautiful birthday cake for my 40th birthday and we had a party at  Cornwall and Vine inviting  everyone. I’d mentioned to her in passing how ungrounded I’d felt lately. So, she and Sean hauled and lifted and grunted and pushed a 150 lb. granite rock up three stories of steps into my apartment!!! I stood on it for most of the party and when Sarah presented me with the cake, in my happy delirium, I just took a big bite out of it! Sarah did the same and mayhem ensued with everyone angling for a bite. Man, that was a FUN party!
